See the plastic rice that is being sold in Nigerian markets due to recession!

Nigerians are responding in perse ways to the economic recession. We need not remind you that times are tough and things are hard in our society now.

Plastic rice is a product that is made of synthetic resins

Families find it hard to eat properly and those who do spend most of their savings on food items. The rich are angry with the economic meltdown while the poor are crying out for help daily.

The exchange rate has affected most things as the prices of the cheapest materials in the market have doubled. As if that is not enough, inferior products have taken over the markets as some greedy Nigerians want to make as much as they can while selling substandard products.

It is disheartening that some people are taking advantage of the situation of things in the society and are cheating innocent Nigerians in the process. Rice is a staple food in Nigeria with almost every family eating this food once or twice daily. This has led some unknown group of people to start selling and distributing plastic rice.

Plastic rice is rice that is made of synthetic resins. In making this plastic starch, potato starch is mixed with plastic and then steamed with rice flavour. The plastic rice is being mixed with good rice in order not to make people suspicious.

In order to test the kind of rice you are buying from the market, you can perform three basic tests on the rice to know if it is plastic rice. The simplest test is to take a handful of the grains of rice and put it in a cup or bowl of water. If the grains sink, it is good rice. However, if the grains float, then there is every likelihood of the rice being made of plastic.

Another way of testing to know the authenticity of the rice product being sold in the market is by setting fire to a handful of the grains. If the rice smells like plastic, then you do not need any proof that you have bought plastic rice from the market.

You can also test for plastic rice by grinding the rice with mortar and pestle. The powder gotten from this action should be white. But if it is artificial rice, there may be yellow discoloration in product.

Eating plastic rice is dangerous as it has the potential to cut short your lives. The best thing to do is to avoid eating this rice and create awareness

Wole Soyinka Fulfils His Words, Leaves America!

Wole Soyinka Fulfils His Words, Leaves America

Nigerian Nobel prize-winning author Wole Soyinka said Thursday he has fulfilled his pledge to throw away his US residency green card and leave the country if Donald Trump won the presidential election.

Shortly before the vote, Soyinka had vowed to give up his permanent US residency over a Trump victory to protest against the Republican billionaire’s campaign promises to get tough on immigration.

“I have already done it, I have disengaged (from the United States). I have done what I said I would do,” the 82-year-old told AFP on the sidelines of an education conference at the University of Johannesburg.

“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and I have relocated, and I’m back to where I have always been” — meaning his homeland Nigeria.

The prolific playwright, novelist and poet won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986 and has been a regular teacher at US universities including Harvard, Cornell and Yale.

At the same time he said he would not discourage others from applying for a green card. “It’s useful in many ways. I wouldn’t for one single moment discourage any Nigerians or anybody from acquiring a green card… but I have had enough of it,” he said.

Stroke:Early identification of symptoms prevents loss of life – expert

A cardiologist, Dr Afolabi Akinkunmi, on Sunday in Lagos said that early identification of risk factors of stroke remained the best way of preventing the life threatening illness. Akinkunmi, President, Association of Residents Doctors (ARD), Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, explained that stroke was also known as a cerebrovascular accident. According to him, the risk factors of stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking as well as advancement in age and heart valve disease. He said: “Stroke occurs when a part of the brain loses its blood supply to a part of the body; blood is deprived of that area and brain cells control stops working. “A stroke is a medical emergency which can happen to anyone; however, the older you are, the higher the risk and stroke can lead to death or permanent disability. “When the signs of stroke appear, time is of the essence to diagnose it because the longer a stroke remains unrecognised and un-treated, the longer brain cells are deprived of oxygen-rich blood. “As such, it is important to identify the signs and risk factors, in order to prevent stroke.’’ On the symptoms of stroke, the cardiologist said there may be no warning signs of a stroke until it occurs. “That is why high blood pressure, one of the risk factors for stroke, is called the silent killer. “Other symptoms like speech, vision, balance, and coordination loss, helps the health care professionals locate the part of the brain that has stopped working,’’ he said. According to him, strokes are also often described based on the function of the body that is lost, as well as by the area of the brain that is affected. The cardiologist also spoke on the most common treatment to administer on a stroke patient. “Drug therapy with blood thinners, airways breathing and circulation to make the patient breathe are recommended. “Also, ensuring that the patient gets adequate blood pressure is a common treatment for someone that has stroke,’’ he said.

Prostitute Stabs Man Who Tried To Pay For Sex With Boiled Egg !

A prostitute in Zimbabwe beat a punter around the head with a beer bottle after he offered to pay for sex with a boiled egg, the DailyMail UK has reported.

Moses Mushonga, 28, walked up to the young lady of the night in the town of Mvurwi in Mashonaland province.

Firstly he manhandled her, leaning into her bra and touching her Bosom .

This did not endear him to the 23-year-old, called Chipo, but to add insult to injury he then tried to haggle with his only asset.

Mushonga told her he had just spent his last bit of money on buying two boiled eggs, which cost 0.25 Zimbabwe dollars, the equivalent of less than a penny or a cent.

Sadly he had already eaten one too.

Moses Mushonga was left bloodied and bruised (pictured, left) after he disrespected the woman by touching her Bosom  (right) and then offering to pay for sex with a boiled egg
Insulted by his attitude, Chipo flew into a rage, hiting hit him with the beer bottle, and then punched him in the face, before knocking him out.

When he came round Mushonga was bleeding heavily from his head.

He told local media: ‘She could have just said no.’

Chipo, who was not charged by police, said she simply felt he needed to be taught a lesson about respect.

Earlier this year the Weekend Post newspaper in the capital, Harare, reported that the economy was so bad that sex workers had reduced their prices to 0.8 Zimbabwe dollars – equivalent to half a loaf of bread.

But they clearly draw the line at a boiled egg.

How T B Joshua inserted pepper into a lady’s vagina over ‘fornication’ – Ex- Synagogue pastor alleges (VIDEO)

A former pastor with the synagogue Church of All Nation has revealed how the founder of the ministry, Prophet T B Joshua nearly killed him while serving under him.

The estranged member of the church revealed that the man of God is so heartless that he subjects pastors under him to untold hardship by flogging them with horse whip, otherwise known as ‘koboko’ at any slightest mistake.

He recalled how he was forced to accuse a lady of committing fornication; and the man of God allegedly grinded pepper and inserted it into her private part.

The pastor in a 20-minute footage recalled how he bought four wheelchairs for the church, which were used in performing fake miracles.

He said, “When I joined the Synagogue Church many years ago, I thought I had met a saviour but unfortunately, I never knew was on a journey into hell.

“In 1997 after I went for a crusade in Ghana I became so close to him (Joshua) following my performances and I was subsequently asked to join the Disciples.

ASUU Calls For The Removal Of Education Minister!

ASUU Calls For The Removal Of Education Minister

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has called for the sack of the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu over what it described as his insensitivity and lack of commitment towards reversing the dwindling fortunes of the Nigerian education sector.

This call was made by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Dr Ndamisa Mohammed Attaahiru.

According to him, the ongoing strike would have been averted if the Minster has been alive to his responsibilities.

He mentioned that since the current administration came on board, that ASUU has been trying to get access to Mr. President however the minster has not allowed such to be possible.

“He should be removed because you cannot stay in a place you are not doing your job. If he was very sensitive to the issues today, I don’t think this strike will have been called for. If his removal will bring prosperity to education because Nigeria is bigger than an individual in this country, we must move forward. If a minister is sitting down on his seat and sabotaging the efforts of education, I think he should be removed. He doesn’t need to be there”.

He equally confirmed that FUTMINNA has joined the strike and has withdrawn all academic services.

"If nothing is done after one week, we will reevaluate the situation on ground and move to the next option which is two weeks. If after two weeks nothing is done we will look at the situation and move to three weeks. If after three weeks nothing is done, we will go on full blown strike." He stated emphatically.

Family planning isn’t about contraception — Mandara

Contraception, recession, and priority for education all rolled into one bitter pill as experts, religious leaders, young people and women’s groups convened for the fourth national family planning conference in Abuja. Mairo Mandara, country representative for Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Nigeria, and a facilitator at the just-ended conference, tells Daily Trust

Dr. Mairo Mandara

The conference got off with a raft of meetings with religious leaders, youth groups and women’s organisations, in efforts to get all on the same page with family planning. What singular lessons stand out?

For me, what stands out is the fact that a lot of the people who came are people who are important stakeholders. Important stakeholders for me are not necessarily the service providers, but the converted people who advocate family planning. It is actually the people whose lives family planning affects, women. There is a good population of women, there is good participation of young people, and there is good participation of religious leaders and traditional leaders.

Now, the framing of family planning is not about contraception; family planning is about life. It is about being able to plan your life in such a way that when you have children you will be a responsible parent. When you have life, you will live your life to the fullest, to the best potentials that you have. It is like when you plan your family, you are able to pay the school fees. It is not just contraception; it is planning to be who you are. It is planning to be a whole human being.

How far do you see this new framing going for family planning?

I don’t think that is a new framing. I think it is better understanding of what family planning is. We’ve come a long way to understand that family planning is a tool to an end. On its own, it is not an end. So, I think we are on the right track. The fact that we have religious leaders, we have traditional leaders. We have National Council of Women’s Society, we have Federation of Muslim Women Associations (among others). We have all these people who have relationship with real humans, I mean ordinary people who are most affected. I think we are on the right track. And, it is a very important tool for improving maternal mortality.

Considering the stance in government’s funding towards family planning, do you think the government is ready to step up on what’s required?

I think the issue of access is really important in the sense that when the demand, like anything else rises, people themselves will push government. We have had  the head of USAID challenging government to stand up to its responsibility and ensure that family planning commodities and other important life-saving commodities for maternal health are available. Like in this country, we have a [package], it is not just family planning, it is life-saving commodities, which include things like misopostrol for prevention of post-partum haemorrhage and essential medicines that make pregnant women live healthy and productive lives.

So, while we advocate that government take that responsibility to step it up, but the most important responsibility of ensuring government keep to its commitment lies with the media. I think this is where, at the end of this conference, if journalists report that we’ve had nice papers, so many important people coming, people attending the programme, it is a done deal. But, what happens after that? What happens now reporting it? It is 10 percent of the job. The 90 percent of the job is what happens after that.

One of the key things that will happen after that, yesterday, we heard the minister say government would increase the reproductive health commodity commitment from $3 million to $4 million. You journalists need to make sure that that is really in 2017 budget, that is really released, it is used. Monitor it that it is not stolen. That is the biggest job you will do for us.

Some of the speakers here have pointed at the National Population Policy and called for a review. As an expert in this area, what are the things you will like to see in the reviewed policy?

I think a reviewed policy, for me, should be human-centred. Every person you see in this country lives within a context. So, for me, a review effort is a population policy that is human-centred, that is development centred, that is looking at moving the whole country into the next level. We are at the critical point that in this country – the recession – a lot of you may differ from me. The recession for me is a blessing.

A blessing in the sense that it is making us reflect and ask tough questions as Nigerians. We are now having to live the reality of who we are. No more borrowing. If you are earning N200,000, you now can’t buy a N2 million car and struggle to borrow to fuel your car, to buy party clothes. We are now prioritizing. We are prioritizing school fees over clothes. I think this is good. If we can sustain this, it will make us better human beings, and we will put the development of our country at the centre.

Now, here, people are beginning to carpool. It will reduce our emission, it will reduce wastage on petroleum. It will make us better human beings to be talking to each other and be sharing ideas along the drive to work and back. I think if we use it positively, it will take us to the next level.

Who’s In Charge Of NNPC? By Azu Ishiekwene!

This corporation, which has defied every serious effort at reform, has been at the heart of our hopes and miseries for decades.

BY AZU ISHIEKWENENOV 17, 2016

In Anthony Sampson’s bestseller, The Seven Sisters, sleaze and oil go hand-in-hand. If there was a Nigerian version of that book, not only will sleaze and oil go hand-in-hand, they’ll be inseparable bedmates and incompetence their guardian angel.

NNPC will be their nest.

This corporation, which has defied every serious effort at reform, has been at the heart of our hopes and miseries for decades.

Its place in our lives is so important that, in the last 16 years, two presidents – Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari – decided to supervise it directly, regardless of public criticism.

Obasanjo couldn’t quite tame the beast, and whatever little success he achieved has unraveled. That’s really an understatement for what happened in the years after.

Between 2010 and 2015, Nigeria earned about N51trillion from oil, but that was also the time when the Jonathan government transferred vital oil assets to local gangs and left the Petroleum Resources minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, to manage them.

While Jonathan held her bag, Diezani shared trillions of naira among politicians, mostly those of her party, the Peoples Democratic Party, brokered sweetheart oil swap deals and made sure NNPC was the ATM of the ruling party.

I’m told that one of the main reasons why Buhari decided to hold the ministerial portfolio was to restore confidence in oil majors who, due to their recent experiences, had vowed not to dine with any minister, even with a long spoon.

Before Buhari’s inauguration, Shell, Total, Agip, Chevron and ConocoPhillips offloaded assets valued at $11.5billion, partly because of the fall in oil prices, but mainly because of the monster of corruption, which they also helped to feed over the years.

That’s part of the legacy that President Buhari’s government wants to change. But the news from the NNPC indicates that the beast is still alive and well.

If Buhari hoped to turn things around by directly supervising NNPC, that’s clearly not working. Where his experience and good intention might have made a difference, the place has been undone by poor, inconsistent and unimaginative appointments.

Buhari’s first mistake was to give in to pressure from those who wanted him to kick Ibe Kachikwu upstairs. The argument that he was combining two offices – GMD and minister of state – and that an “outsider” couldn’t fix the place were largely self-serving.

The lobbyists, mostly insiders who felt threatened, wanted Kachikwu out of the way. He is not completely out of the way yet since he’s still the junior minister and chairman of the NNPC Board. But let’s face it, the way things stand today, the man is just a piece of furniture. He’s not in charge.

If Kachikwu still has any illusions, the unilateral appointments made this week by the GMD, Maikanti Baru, should settle the matter. Baru reversed virtually all the appointments made by Kachikwu six months ago and left his boss to find out what had happened in his backyard from newspapers.

Kachikwu, who is supposed to be junior minister and chairman of the NNPC Board, had no idea of what was coming, when or why.

Baru may argue till the next super moon that he had only good intentions, but that’s the paving stone on the road to hell. How can he possibly defend making such large scale changes behind the back of his immediate boss and the board?

The clandestine way the changes were made has already invited needless suspicions of an ethnic agenda. Out of 108 appointments, for example, 31 (or nearly 34 per cent) are from the North West, his zone.

The South South comes second with 20; the North East and South West come next with 17 each; the North Central, 16, and the South East, 7.

In Nigeria’s ethnically charged math, Baru’s changes work out to 64 appointments for the North and 44 for the South. And he passed over the head of his Southern boss to get approval.

For an administration that has been frequently accused of favouring a section of the country, it should find these changes worrisome.

Insiders in Baru’s office have denied any ethnic motive. They have denied that this was partly vendetta against a few among whom Garbadeen Muhammad, former president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Kachikwu appointee, is the poster victim.

But the question is, why were the changes done behind the back of the junior minister and the board? And why is the announcement coming 24 hours before the inauguration of the board?

I don’t know how much longer he is willing to put up with being kicked around, but this is clearly Kachikwu’s moment of truth.

If he can be moved to a largely ceremonial position without a reason; if NNPC’s pump price changes can be made without his knowledge, and if appointments can be made in a ministry that he supervises without his input, then he needs to ask himself if he still has a job.

The real elephant in the room is Buhari approving the changes before Kachikwu found out. It’s yet another sad chapter in the greasy tale of the NNPC, a beast that apparently consumes the reform and the reformer.

For over 12 hours on Wednesday, traffic on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, arguably Nigeria’s busiest gateway, was at a standstill.

Multiple accidents at the Berger end of the road, including a tanker fire, had made the road hell for commuters for whom the ongoing road repair was already enough trouble.

Wednesday’s tanker fire, probably the 99th in the last one year, will not be the last. And this is despite the best efforts of the Federal Road Safety Commission to prevent it.

What can the commission do with only six 70-ton tanker rescue trucks provided by the World Bank, each valued at over N210m at current market prices?

If the government is unwilling or unable to invest in rescue equipment, the commission may wish to consider pressing for a drastic review of the insurance cost on tankers, which is currently around N800,000.

If the owners pay more from their pockets, they’ll think twice about the quality of drivers and vehicles they put on the roads.

And who knows, we just might have less risk to public health and safety from blazing tankers.

Ishiekwene is the Managing Director/Editor-In-Chief of The Interview and member of the board of the Global Editors Network.

“And part of the motive of the organization is providing for the less privileged. We have come here and seen that there are a lot of people in need financially and we are here to render the assistance.

“We believe that if we save these people’s lives today, they would be the ones to save other people’s lives tomorrow.

BIAFRA: Court decides Nnamdi Kanu, 3 others’ bail on Dec 1

Nnochiri ABUJA—Trial Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday, fixed December 1 to decide whether or not the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, should be released on bail, pending his trial. The court said it would also consider the merit of separate bail applications by three other pro-Biafra agitators, Mr. Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial alongside Kanu. The four defendants are answering to an 11-count charge bordering on treasonable felony and their alleged involvement in acts of terrorism. Specifically, the Federal Government alleged that the quartet conspired to commit treasonable felony contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, CAP. C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2014. Government alleged that they committed the offence along with others  now at large, on diverse dates in 2014 and 2015, in Nigeria, London and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, at the resumed sitting yesterday, the defendants, who are currently at Kuje Prison, through their respective lawyers, urged the court to release them on bail pending the determination of the case against them. Whereas Kanu moved his bail application through his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Onwudiwe was represented by Mr. I. Adoga, while Madubugwu and Nwawuisi were represented by Mr. E. I. Efeme and Mr. Maxwell Okpara, respectively. Meanwhile, government lawyer, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, vehemently opposed the release of any of the defendants on bail, insisting that they would constitute “a threat to national security.” Also the family members of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, and Director of Radio Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Okwu Kanu have accused the international media outfits in the world, particularly Cable Network News, CNN, and British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, Aljazira and other media companies of being bias against their son Mazi Kanu and the struggle for Biafra actualization. In a statement signed by Prince Emmanuel Okwu Kanu for the family, described as unfortunate a situation where the media outfit that are supposed to be resolute in educating the people of the world on truth turned back to stab the truth. “It is unfortunate that CNN, BBC and other international media companies that suppose to be resolute in educating the people of the world on the truth turned back and stab the truth.” The family further stated that, “the CNN and BBC were paid by the Obama government and British Government not air news concerning Biafra struggle and Nnamdi Kanu, which is not fair, Aljazira was a bit fair for the news of Biafra and for the release of my brother Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is being incarcerated since one year and some more months now.” “We the members of the family are worried on why the international media outfits in the class of CNN and BBC cannot tell the entire world the truth instead they were allowed to be bought over by evil people in the world, we do not believe before now that outfits like CNN and BBC can be so cheap and loose to the level that they will not proves the ethics of journalism. “However, they fail to understand that people around the globe believe in their news before, but today they are no more relevant in the face of general public because of their lies, people believe more on tweeter messages, Face book and other social media outlets and newspaper reports now. “With this, very soon Radio Biafra will build an international media outfit, if it is not already in that class, that will compete with the compromised international media outfits like CNN and BBC. “The Obama administration recognized, defend and support Muslims in the world in everything more than the Christians and he and his administration collaborated with the CNN and BBC in every evil committed by the Muslims.” The family alleged that, “the American and British ambassadors in Nigeria were also in collaboration with the BBC, CNN and Muslims to kill unarmed members of IPOB who were massacred in a cold blood in different cities in Nigeria and the support for the illegal detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and other IPOB members detained illegally in all the prisons and security cells in Nigeria. “The ambassadors in their support for senseless killings of IPOB members by the security agents in Nigeria but for one day have never condemned the killing, is a clear indication that they are aware of the barbaric attitude of security agents in Nigeria. “It is imperative to let the people of the Nigeria and the world to know that Nigeria is never one nation and cannot be one because it is nations with different value system before amalgamation in 1914 and we ask these three nations of Arewa, Oduduwa and Biafra should ask themselves this question who are you before amalgamation in 1914, you must trace your origin before it is too late

Averting another ASUU mega strike!

A week ago, the Academic Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) served notice of its intention to embark on a one-week warning strike with effect from Wednesday, 16th November, 2016. Its President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, claimed that ASUU took the action after nationwide consultations with the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Union, though the Minister of Labour, Dr Chris Ngige, insisted the Federal Government (ASUU members’ main employer) was not notified. ASUU said its leadership came under great pressure from its members over pending issues such as the 2009 Collective Bargaining Agreement and 2014 Memorandum of Understanding, which were not properly implemented. These cover the areas of proper funding of universities (which went down to eight per cent in 2016 from 11 per cent in 2015, despite the fact that this year’s budget was significantly higher at N6.06 Trillion compared to N4.4 Trillion of 2015); unpaid pension to retiring members, complications from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the perennial issue of university autonomy and the need to renegotiate the 2009 pact. Coming barely one month into the new academic session when the universities are just settling down to business, we are apprehensive that if this matter is not amicably resolved we might be in for another long haul of a full-blown strike soon. ASUU and doctors’ strikes are infamous for their obdurate, prolonged stalemates. There is no other part of the sane world where university workers stop work almost on a yearly basis like Nigeria, mainly because of the unwillingness or inability of successive regimes to sit down and solve the problems of our universities once and for all. This unfeeling attitude of decision makers to the needs of our universities has often been attributed to the fact that most of them educate their children in  abroad and in expensive local private tertiary institutions where the academic environments are stable and sure. The ASUU challenge presents an opportunity for the President Muhammadu Buhari regime to prove itself as truly a regime determined to change the ways that past governments mishandled matters (such as agreements and MOU’s with the Labour Unions) by laying these contentious issues to rest conclusively. We also urge the university teachers and other Labour unions to take cognisance of the fragile economic situation facing the nation. We are struggling with a numbing recession which requires the understanding of all patriotic Nigerians to ensure we get out of it as soon as possible. The Federal Government and the unions must eschew undue brick-batting and address these issues without disrupting academic activities. Prolonged standoffs are futile, since at the end of the day, both sides will still come to some agreement after great damage has already been done

President Obama warns Trump against cutting ‘convenient’ deals with Russia

BERLIN, GERMANY – NOVEMBER 17: German Chancellor Angela Merkel (R) and U.S. President Barack Obama attend a joint press conference at the Chancellery on November 17, 2016 in Berlin, Germany. President Obama is on his last trip to Europe and is scheduled to hold talks with Chancellor Merkel as well as French President Francois Hollande, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in Berlin tomorrow.

U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday in Berlin said he hope that his successor, Donald Trump, would not make deals with Russia for the sake of political convenience.

He said “Trump should not take realpolitik approach and just cut some deals with Russia even if it hurts people or even if it violates international norms or leaves smaller countries vulnerable.

“He should not do whatever is convenient at the time,” Obama said at a press conference with the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, in Berlin.

“I’ve sought a constructive relationship with Russia but what I have also been is realistic in recognising there are some significant differences in how Russia views the world and how we view the world.

My hope is that the president-elect coming in takes a similarly constructive approach, finding areas where we can cooperate with Russia where our values and interest align. But that the president-elect also is willing to stand up to Russia where they are deviating from our values and international norms,”Obama added.

Asked about Trump’s behaviour during the week following the election, Obama said the role itself would make him a fit president.

“What makes me cautiously optimistic about my successor and the shift from campaign to governance is there is something about the solemn responsibilities of that office, the extraordinary demands that are placed on the United States not just by its own people but by people around the world, that forces you to focus,” Obama said.

“That demands seriousness. And if you’re not serious about the job, then you probably won’t be there very long,” he added.

Facebook fake-news writer: ‘I think Donald Trump is in the White House because of me

November 17 at 6:00 AM

Play Video0:55

Twitter, Google, Facebook are changing their policies to prevent bullying and improve accuracy.(Reuters)

What do the Amish lobbygay wedding vans and the ban of the national anthem have in common? For starters, they’re all make-believe — and invented by the same man.

Paul Horner, the 38-year-old impresario of a Facebook fake-news empire, has made his living off viral news hoaxes for several years. He has twice convinced the Internet that he’s British graffiti artist Banksy; he also published the very viral, very fake news of a Yelp vs. “South Park” lawsuit last year.

But in recent months, Horner has found the fake-news ecosystem growing more crowded, more political and vastly more influential: In March, Donald Trump’s son Ericand his then-campaign manager,Corey Lewandowski, even tweeted links to one of Horner’s faux-articles. His stories have also appeared as news on Google.

(Paul Horner)

In light of concerns that stories like Horner’s may have affected the presidential election, and in the wake of announcements that both Google and Facebook would take action against deceptive outlets, Intersect called Horner to discuss his perspective on fake news. This transcript has been edited for clarity, length and — ahem — bad language.

[The only true winners of this election are trolls]

You’ve been writing fake news for a while now — you’re kind of like the OG Facebook news hoaxer. Well, I’d call it hoaxing or fake news. You’d call it parody or satire. How is that scene different now than it was three or five years ago? Why did something like your story about Obama invalidating the election results (almost 250,000 Facebook shares, as of this writing) go so viral?

Honestly, people are definitely dumber. They just keep passing stuff around. Nobody fact-checks anything anymore — I mean, that’s how Trump got elected. He just said whatever he wanted, and people believed everything, and when the things he said turned out not to be true, people didn’t care because they’d already accepted it. It’s real scary. I’ve never seen anything like it.

You mentioned Trump, and you’ve probably heard the argument, or the concern, that fake news somehow helped him get elected. What do you make of that?

My sites were picked up by Trump supporters all the time. I think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers don’t fact-check anything — they’ll post everything, believe anything. His campaign manager posted my story about a protester getting paid $3,500 as fact. Like, I made that up. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist.

(Twitter via Mediaite)

Why? I mean — why would you even write that?

Just ’cause his supporters were under the belief that people were getting paid to protest at their rallies, and that’s just insane. I’ve gone to Trump protests — trust me, no one needs to get paid to protest Trump. I just wanted to make fun of that insane belief, but it took off. They actually believed it.

Popular Politician Caught Staring Down at Donald Trump's Wife's S*xy Pictures on His Phone During Public Meeting (Photos)

In what will come across as a rather unexpected development, a politician has been caught staring down at Donald Trump's wife on his mobile phone.

Tanveer Sait, an Indian

minister has been accused of looking at pornographic images on his phone in a public meeting.

However, the man revealed that the photos were actually saucy snaps of Donald Trump's wife.

Daily Star UK reports that Tanveer Sait, who is the minister of Primary and Secondary Education in Karnataka State, in Southern India, was sitting look at the photos when he was snapped by local media.

Initially it was reported it was porn, but it later emerged that they appeared to be saucy snaps of Melania Trump - the wife of US President-elect Donald Trump.

Senior police officers who have reviewed the footage from the event have confirmed that the images shown on the photographs being published were of Melania Trump, confirming that this is what the minister had been looked at, if the photographs were not doctored.

The 15-year old pictures of the wife of the next American President have been widely circulated on various social media platforms after Donald Trump's victory in the US Presidential elections.

However the minister has taken issue with local media reports that the photos were of the US President-elect's wife, saying that he was actually looking at pictures of a historical figure and Imperial leader known as Tipu Sultan, which he received on his phone.

He said he planned to take legal action against the cameraman who snapped the photographs of him, accusing them of creating a hoax.

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and will be preparing a report.

Twitter User Shares How His Cousin was Almost Lynched to Death at a Market!

Jungle justice is becoming rampant in the Nigerian society these days, and it’s troubling. Almost every week, at least a story of how one suspected criminal was lynched makes its way to the media, and this excludes other cases that go unreported.

More recently, photos of a young man who was beaten and burnt to death by a mob went viral on social media.

While some claimed he was 7-years old and was lynched because he stole Garri (a staple food), others claimed he was a 20-year-old notorious armed robber who was part of a gang terrorising the area. Either way, taking laws into our own hands is wrong.

The whole attack was even filmed, and you could hear fellow Nigerians shout “hit him very well” in the background.

This story shared by a Twitter user following this latest case sheds more light on why cases like this should be allowed to be handled by the appropriate authorities.
